Scripture of the Week by JoBeth Kested

Scripture for the week of December 14, 2014

JoBeth25God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. 1 John 4:9-10 (NLT)

How would you feel to find out that someone else had to die in order for you to live? This time of year we celebrate the birth of Jesus forgetting why He came into this world. God sent Jesus, His only son, as a innocent baby; an extravagant demonstration of His great love for us and He would grow up to die on our behalf on the cross. No matter how hard we try, we are never able to work hard enough, to be good enough or to love God enough to deserve the sacrifice Jesus was willing to make for us. He not only paid the price for the forgiveness of our sins, but that we will have His hope for eternity with His comfort, peace and love through joys and sorrows in this life. In this Christmas season of shopping, parties and family gatherings for sharing gifts, let us not forget the reason for the season and the greatest gift of God’s love for us in Jesus.
